Tuaz Boat Scene

Virtual Production is a technology developed by Technicolor, which allows filmmakers to layout and set up movies in a digital environment prior to going on an actual physical set. A game changer for the film and gaming industry as it essentially saves hundreds of hours in post production by creating everything you see within the camera. Some of the benefits include; previsualisation, realtime scene integration, lighting design, onset live world building and camera tracking integration.

Virtual productions require three key technologies:
1. An Unreal Engine environment that responds in real-time to input from cameras.
2. 3D camera tracking to connect the 3D environment to cameras’ movement.
3. An LED wall to act as the backdrop to the virtual set.

At MVP, we specialize in bringing creative visions to life using advanced technology and cutting-edge techniques. In this particular scenario, we were tasked with filming Tuatini in a skit that would create the illusion of him travelling on a jet boat across a vast lake.

To create the virtual environment, we used a combination of pre-shot footage and computer-generated imagery. We captured sweeping shots of the lake and surrounding landscape, and used these as a backdrop on our LED screens. To create the illusion of motion, we used a motion control rig to simulate the movement of the jet boat.

To bring this scene to life, we also focused on creating realistic lighting and sound effects. We experimented with different lighting setups to recreate the reflections on the water and the feel of the sun on Tuatini's skin. We also used a range of sound effects, such as the roar of the jet boat engine and the splashing of water, to create a fully immersive experience for the viewer.

Despite the challenges we faced with limited equipment and technology, our team was able to bring this exciting jet boat scene to life through trial and error and a lot of hard work. We're always looking for new and innovative ways to bring our clients' visions to life, and this skit was just one example of the exciting and creative projects we take on at the Māui Virtual Production Space.

The Cosy Apartment

At the Māui Virtual Production Space, we're always striving to push the boundaries of what's possible in the world of film and television. In this particular scene, we set out to recreate the warm and welcoming atmosphere of a downtown city apartment.

Talent: Lincoln Ashleigh & Keanu Kruiz

To bring the scene to life, we focused on augmenting the lighting to match the digital background and adding haze to enhance the realism of the environment. We also positioned our subjects sitting higher off the ground to dispel the illusion of the ground and create a sense of depth and perspective.

This shoot was also an opportunity for our team to practice using a steadicam and focus on stability and smooth operation. We brought in Nick, an experienced focus puller, to help execute the final applied outcome and get in sync with the camera on an external wireless monitor.

Overall, the Māui Virtual Production Space is a place where creativity and innovation thrive. Whether you're looking to hone your technical skills or bring your vision to life in a virtual environment, we have the resources and expertise to make it happen. So if you're a director, producer, or cinematographer looking to take your craft to the next level, be sure to check out our state-of-the-art facility.

Just another day in New York

The Māui Virtual Production Space is the perfect place for directors, producers, and cinematographers looking to create immersive, realistic scenes in a virtual environment. In this particular scene, we were able to recreate the experience of navigating through the bustling streets of New York City during peak hour traffic.

To create the virtual environment, Māui DP Mads, used plates of New York City Traffic as the backdrop and focused on the character's experiences inside the vehicle. We wanted to recreate the sense of motion and used a projector to emulate some of the city lights and reflections focused on the character as he drove.

Our team also experimented with lighting to bring the scene to life and create a sense of depth and realism through the way the character interacted in traffic and to his surroundings. We utilized the LED screens and other resources available to us to create a truly authentic experience for the viewer.
